enlightening article i came across after my post yesterday [leggings] while searching for the history of leotards, it has plenty of magazine & catalog scans dating back to Gym suit, Sears Roebuck Catalog, 1923. i will copy a couple of photos from this article which gives a good history to the late 1980's. this is only my 3rd ever post on this thread

looks like jane fonda was responsible for making gym wear mainstream because until then this was mostly a catalog order type at home exercise sportswear fashion
