Roller Derby is a sport that began in 1935 and grew increasingly popular in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and into 80s... From then on it began to lose popularity, until it was rejuvenated in 2001 and "reborn." Although men compete in all-male leagues, it is the female leagues that get top exposure.

In roller derby's "second phase" (post 2001), spandex has become increasingly popular in usage over the years by derby players. While, most teams allow the player to wear whatever type of bottoms they prefer, and hence we get a wide range of creative expression by the athletes below the waist.
